2.30.A — Why Do Human Beings Ask Questions About Purpose?
(General Revelation Evidence)
Bearings: Where do we stand right now?
In the previous essays we explored several distinctive features of human life: consciousness, rational thought, creativity, and the appreciation of beauty. These capacities suggest that human beings experience reality in ways that extend beyond simple biological survival. Yet another feature appears almost everywhere human beings are found. People ask questions about meaning and purpose. We do not merely live; we ask why we live. We reflect on our goals, our direction, and the significance of our lives. This persistent search for purpose raises an important question. Why do human beings feel compelled to ask about meaning at all?
Why Do Human Beings Ask Questions About Purpose?
The Human Search for Meaning
Human history is filled with attempts to answer questions about purpose. Philosophers, poets, and religious traditions have all wrestled with the question of why human life exists.
People ask questions such as:
Why am I here?
What is the purpose of life?
Does my existence matter?
These questions appear in cultures across the world. Even individuals who reject religious explanations often continue to search for personal meaning or significance.
The search for purpose seems deeply embedded in human experience.
More Than Survival
If human life were driven only by biological survival, questions about purpose would seem unnecessary. An organism focused entirely on survival would concentrate on food, safety, and reproduction.
Yet human beings regularly step beyond those immediate concerns. People risk comfort, safety, and sometimes even life itself in pursuit of ideals, beliefs, or missions they believe are meaningful.
This behavior suggests that humans evaluate life according to standards that go beyond physical survival.
Purpose and Identity
Questions about purpose are often connected to questions about identity. People want to understand who they are and what role they play in the larger story of the world.
Individuals may seek purpose through work, relationships, creativity, service, or spiritual commitment. Even when people disagree about what the purpose of life is, the search itself remains widespread.
This universal search suggests that human beings instinctively believe life should have meaning.
Scripture and the Purpose of Human Life
The Bible presents human life as purposeful because it originates from the intentional act of God. Human beings are created with a relationship to their Creator and a role within His creation.
The book of Ecclesiastes acknowledges the deep human awareness of meaning when it says:
“He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart.”
— Ecclesiastes 3:11 (ESV)
This passage suggests that human beings possess an awareness that life connects to something larger than immediate experience.
What the Search for Purpose Suggests
The human longing for purpose raises an important philosophical question. Why should creatures produced by purely material processes experience such a strong desire for meaning?
If the universe were ultimately indifferent, the expectation that life should have purpose would appear difficult to explain.
General revelation does not yet provide the full answer to the question of purpose. But it clearly reveals that human beings seek meaning and believe that their lives matter.
This persistent search invites deeper reflection about whether the structure of reality includes intention and design.

Before We Head Out: What Have We Learned, and Where Is It Leading Us?
Human beings consistently ask questions about meaning and purpose. Across cultures and throughout history people have searched for answers to why life exists and what role they play within the world. This search suggests that humans instinctively expect life to have significance beyond mere survival. Scripture connects this longing to the fact that God has placed a sense of eternity within the human heart (Ecclesiastes 3:11). From the perspective of general revelation, the human pursuit of purpose points toward the possibility that life is not accidental but meaningful. In the next essay we will examine how the human awareness of mortality further deepens this search for meaning and destiny.
