3.05.A — Why Is Special Revelation Necessary?
(Special Revelation)
Bearings: Where do we stand right now?
Stage Two showed us something important about reality. Creation reveals many truths about God. The universe displays order, mathematical structure, stable laws, and conditions that allow life to exist. Human experience reveals moral awareness, conscience, rational thought, creativity, longing for justice, and the desire for restoration. These observations together form what Christians call general revelation. Creation speaks. Human nature speaks. Yet this testimony, while powerful, leaves major questions unanswered. We know something about God’s existence and character, but we do not yet know the full story of redemption. This raises the next question in our journey. If creation reveals that God is real, why is something more needed?
Why Is Special Revelation Necessary?
What General Revelation Provides
General revelation gives real knowledge about God. The natural world reflects His power and wisdom. Human conscience reveals moral accountability. The structure of reality suggests order and purpose.
Scripture itself affirms this testimony. The apostle Paul writes:
“For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.”
— Romans 1:19 (ESV)
Creation therefore provides genuine evidence that God exists and that human beings are accountable before Him.
However, general revelation does not explain everything.
What General Revelation Cannot Tell Us
While creation reveals that God exists, it does not fully reveal who God is. The stars display power and beauty, but they do not describe God’s character in detail. The moral law written on the heart exposes guilt, but it does not explain how forgiveness is possible.
General revelation leaves humanity aware of several truths:
God exists.
The world displays order and purpose.
Human beings are morally accountable.
Something within the world is broken.
Yet general revelation does not reveal the path of reconciliation between humanity and God.
Awareness Without Redemption
Because general revelation reveals moral responsibility without providing the solution to guilt, it creates a particular tension. People become aware that they fall short of the moral standards they recognize.
This awareness often leads to religious searching. Throughout history people have created rituals, sacrifices, and systems of belief in an attempt to address guilt and restore relationship with the divine.
These efforts reveal the human desire for reconciliation, but they do not provide certainty about how reconciliation occurs.
Humanity senses the problem but lacks a clear answer.
Why God Must Speak Clearly
If the human condition involves moral failure and the need for restoration, then humanity requires more than indirect clues from creation. We require a clear explanation from God Himself.
This is where special revelation becomes necessary.
Special revelation refers to the ways God has communicated specific truths about His character, His purposes, and His plan for redemption. Unlike general revelation, which comes through creation and conscience, special revelation involves direct communication.
God speaks through His Word.
Scripture as Special Revelation
The Bible presents itself as the primary record of God’s special revelation. Through Scripture, God reveals truths that cannot be discovered through observation of nature alone.
Scripture explains the origin of humanity, the entrance of sin into the world, and the plan of redemption that unfolds through history.
The psalmist captures the difference between general and special revelation in Psalm 19. After describing how the heavens declare God’s glory, the psalm shifts to God’s Word:
“The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul.”
— Psalm 19:7 (ESV)
Creation declares.
The Word restores.
Personal Reflection Questions
Understanding
Why does humanity need special revelation if general revelation already reveals that God exists?
Examination
Do I underestimate how much I need God to speak clearly about sin, forgiveness, and restoration?
Where do I see in myself the tension of awareness without redemption?
Action
What truth from Scripture should I return to when I need clarity about who God is and how He restores?
Before We Head Out: What Have We Learned, and Where Is It Leading Us?
General revelation reveals that God exists, that the universe reflects order and purpose, and that human beings are morally accountable before their Creator (Romans 1:19). Yet it does not explain how broken humanity can be reconciled to God. The world points toward God, but it does not provide the full message of redemption. For that reason special revelation becomes necessary. God must speak clearly if humanity is to understand His character and His plan for restoration. In the next essay we will examine the different ways God has provided this special revelation throughout history.
