Reason

« Back to Glossary Index

Definition:

Reason is the God-given capacity to think, understand, and form judgments based on evidence, logic, and coherent thought. It allows us to reflect, compare ideas, and draw conclusions in pursuit of truth.

Biblical Basis:

Proverbs 18:13 — “If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame.”

Acts 18:4 — “And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and tried to persuade Jews and Greeks.”

Romans 12:1 — “…present your bodies as a living sacrifice… which is your spiritual worship.” (Greek: “logikos” – reasonable, rational)

Theological Significance:

Reason is not the enemy of faith—it’s one of faith’s allies. God created the mind and invites us to use it in service to Him. While reason alone cannot regenerate the heart, it is essential for understanding Scripture, discerning truth from lies, and engaging the world wisely. Reason grounds our beliefs in reality rather than emotion or tradition.

How We Use It in DiscipleLife:

We don’t check our brains at the trailhead. This journey calls for a sharp mind, willing to examine, wrestle, and test what we hear. Reason helps us spot false trails and stay oriented in a world full of deception. Discipleship that ignores reason becomes shallow. Faith that walks with reason becomes strong.
