Epistemology

« Back to Glossary Index

Definition:

Epistemology is the study of how we know what we know, including the sources, limits, and reliability of knowledge. It asks foundational questions about truth, evidence, and justification. Every worldview operates from an epistemology, whether examined or assumed.

Biblical Basis:

Proverbs 1:7 — “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

Romans 1:19–20; John 18:37; Colossians 2:3

Theological Significance:

Scripture teaches that true knowledge begins with God, not human reasoning alone. When epistemology is detached from God’s revelation, knowledge becomes unstable and self-referential. Biblical epistemology grounds knowing in God’s self-disclosure through creation, Scripture, and Christ.

How We Use It in DiscipleLife:

DiscipleLife treats epistemology as foundational before moving deeper into doctrine or practice. We learn to examine how we know before arguing about what we know. This prevents confusion, false confidence, and inherited assumptions from guiding the journey.
