Self-Examination

« Back to Glossary Index

Definition:

Self-examination is the deliberate practice of honestly assessing one’s heart, beliefs, and posture before God. It is not self-condemnation, but self-awareness in the light of truth. Scripture calls believers to examine themselves as part of spiritual growth and readiness.

Biblical Basis:

2 Corinthians 13:5 — “Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves…”

Psalm 139:23–24; Lamentations 3:40; 1 Corinthians 11:28

Theological Significance:

Without self-examination, believers can confuse habit with faith and activity with obedience. Scripture presents examination as a safeguard against self-deception. Honest examination invites God to reveal what needs correction and growth.

How We Use It in DiscipleLife:

DiscipleLife begins with self-examination because orientation determines direction. We pause to assess where we truly are before deciding where to go. This practice sets the tone for humility, honesty, and transformation throughout the journey.
