Interpretation

« Back to Glossary Index

Definition:

Interpretation is the process of understanding the meaning of a text or message. In Scripture, interpretation seeks to uncover what the author intended, not what the reader prefers. Faithful interpretation depends on context, careful reading, and submission to truth.

Biblical Basis:

Luke 24:27 — “And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.”

Nehemiah 8:8; 2 Timothy 2:15; 2 Peter 3:16

Theological Significance:

Scripture does not interpret itself automatically; it must be read and understood rightly. Errors in interpretation can lead to serious doctrinal confusion even when Scripture is quoted accurately. Right interpretation honors God’s Word by seeking its true meaning.

How We Use It in DiscipleLife:

DiscipleLife trains readers to interpret Scripture carefully rather than quickly. We learn to ask what a passage means before asking how it applies. This discipline guards against projecting our assumptions onto God’s Word.
