Abide
« Back to Glossary Index
Definition:
To abide means to remain, dwell, or continue in a close relationship with Christ. It implies an active, ongoing connection—not merely believing in Him but living in dependence on Him, drawing life, strength, and direction from His presence.
Biblical Basis:
John 15:4–5 — “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself… neither can you, unless you abide in me.”
1 John 2:6 — “Whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.”
Galatians 2:20 — “It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me…”
Theological Significance:
Abiding is not a passive state—it is the essential posture of a true disciple. It expresses trust, surrender, and the daily, deliberate choice to remain in fellowship with Jesus. Without abiding, the Christian life becomes hollow, disconnected from the source of spiritual vitality. This concept lies at the heart of sanctification and ongoing transformation.
