Assumptions
Assumptions are beliefs or ideas we accept as true, often without conscious examination. They form the unseen foundation beneath our thinking, shaping how we interpret experiences, evidence, and Scripture. Everyone operates from assumptions, whether they are recognized or not.
Biblical Basis:
Romans 12:2 — “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind…”
Proverbs 18:13; Colossians 2:8; 2 Corinthians 10:5
Theological Significance:
Unexamined assumptions can distort truth and lead us to misinterpret reality, even when reading Scripture. Scripture repeatedly calls God’s people to examine their thinking and bring every thought into alignment with Christ. Renewed thinking requires identifying what we have assumed without testing.
How We Use It in DiscipleLife:
DiscipleLife begins with self-examination because transformation cannot occur without first identifying the assumptions we bring with us. Many spiritual disagreements are not about Scripture itself, but about unspoken assumptions underneath it. Learning to surface and test these assumptions is essential for discipleship.
