Authority

« Back to Glossary Index

Definition:

Authority refers to the recognized right to define truth, determine meaning, and direct belief or action. In matters of faith and worldview, authority answers the question of who or what gets the final say. Every person operates under some authority, whether acknowledged or assumed.

Biblical Basis:

Matthew 28:18 — “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”

Isaiah 33:22; Colossians 2:8; Hebrews 1:1–2

Theological Significance:

Scripture presents God as the ultimate authority over reality, truth, and life. When authority is shifted from God to self, culture, or tradition, truth becomes unstable and subjective. Right authority places truth outside ourselves, where it can correct rather than conform to us.

How We Use It in DiscipleLife:

DiscipleLife consistently asks where authority is being placed, especially when beliefs conflict. Many disagreements are not about conclusions, but about authority. Clarifying authority early prevents confusion later in the journey.
