Bearings

« Back to Glossary Index

Definition:

Bearings refer to one’s sense of direction or orientation when navigating a journey. Spiritually, bearings describe how a person understands where they are, where they are headed, and what direction is true. Without clear bearings, even sincere movement can lead off course.

Biblical Basis:

Proverbs 3:5–6 — “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

Psalm 119:105; Isaiah 30:21; Matthew 7:13–14

Theological Significance:

Scripture repeatedly uses directional language to describe faith, obedience, and truth. Losing bearings does not require rebellion, only misalignment. God’s Word functions as the fixed reference point by which true direction is known.

How We Use It in DiscipleLife:

DiscipleLife uses the concept of bearings to emphasize alignment before movement. We pause regularly to re-check direction rather than assume progress equals truth. Maintaining correct bearings protects the journey from slow, unnoticed drift.
