Discipleship

« Back to Glossary Index

Definition:
Discipleship is the lifelong journey of following Jesus, being conformed to His image, and learning to live by truth and love. It is not just a program, class, or label—it’s a process of transformation. True discipleship involves surrender, obedience, relationship, and ongoing formation through the Holy Spirit and the Word of God.

Biblical Basis:

  • Matthew 28:19–20 — “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations… teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”
  • Luke 9:23 — “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”
  • Romans 12:2 — “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind…”

Theological Significance:
Discipleship is not optional for believers—it’s the very definition of what it means to be a Christian. Jesus didn’t call people to make converts, but disciples. It involves teaching, correction, community, self-denial, and growth. It’s not about achieving perfection, but becoming people who love like Christ. Discipleship is not something we attend—it’s something we become.

How We Use It in DiscipleLife:
This entire project is built around the call to be disciples—people who are being changed from the inside out. Discipleship is the trail. The essays, the questions, the reflections—all exist to support the journey of becoming agape beings. We don’t just believe differently—we live differently.
