Identity

« Back to Glossary Index

Definition:

Identity refers to how a person understands who they are and where they belong. In Scripture, identity is rooted not in achievement, feelings, or roles, but in relationship with God. For believers, identity is received, not constructed.

Biblical Basis:

2 Corinthians 5:17 — “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

Galatians 2:20; Romans 8:15–17; Ephesians 1:3–7

Theological Significance:

A distorted identity leads to misplaced purpose and insecurity. Scripture consistently anchors identity in God’s action rather than human performance. Knowing who we are in Christ stabilizes faith and obedience.

How We Use It in DiscipleLife:

DiscipleLife treats identity as foundational to the entire journey. We do not begin by asking what we should do, but who we are becoming. A clear identity in Christ reshapes how we think, live, and love.
