Meaning

« Back to Glossary Index

Definition:

Meaning refers to the purpose, significance, or value of life and existence. In a biblical worldview, meaning is not something we invent—it is something we receive. True meaning begins with the recognition that we were created by God, for God, and are called to reflect His image in relationship with Him and others. Apart from God, meaning collapses into temporary pleasures, self-definition, or despair.

Biblical Basis:

Ecclesiastes 12:13 — “The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.”

Isaiah 43:7 — “…everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory…”

Colossians 1:16 — “All things were created through him and for him.”

Romans 11:36 — “For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.”

Theological Significance:

Humans are meaning-seeking beings. Our need for purpose is a reflection of being made in God’s image. When disconnected from the Creator, we try to fill the void with identity, achievement, or pleasure—but none can satisfy. The gospel reveals that true meaning is not found in what we do, but in whose we are. To live with meaning is to live in alignment with God’s design and destiny.

How We Use It in DiscipleLife:

In the Orientation section, “meaning” is explored as one of the four essential worldview questions. This project insists that discipleship begins with asking, “Why am I here?” and recognizing that the answer can’t be found inside the self. We point readers to a God-given purpose that transcends self-fulfillment and leads to agape-driven transformation.
